A Numerical Approach to Evaluating Groundwater Vulnerability to Seawater Intrusion on Jeju Volcanic Island, South Korea

چکیده
Seawater intrusion (SWI) is a critical issue for coastal aquifers, especially in islands where groundwater the sole source of water supply. The objective this study was to develop straightforward approach evaluating vulnerability SWI, using statistical method with spatial analyses applied four basins Jeju volcanic island. In study, five factors were parametrized, including hydraulic conductivity, level, distance from shoreline wells, well depth and use. These parameters spatially interpolated correlated electrical conductivity as proxy salinization, resulting three significant relations: use, depth, level. Then, numerical model SWI assessment constructed ratings weights, by weak, moderate high index. Regional conditions, major land-use types, industrial activities, population degree urbanisation, could affect differently at each region. Based on percentage area vulnerability, regions Island followed order eastern > northern western southern, indicating that preventive measures its influencing be more effectively certain regions.

abstract previous studies on willingness to communicate (wtc) have shown the influence of many individual or situational factors on students’ tendency to engage in classroom communication, in which wtc has been viewed either at the trait-level or situational level. however, due to the complexity of the notion of willingness to communicate, the present study suggests that these two strands are ...

متن کاملCoastal Erosion Due to Seawater Intrusion into Groundwater Aquifers
Problem Statement: In general, the drinking water systems sourced from ground water (GW) contains chemicals at double the current maximum contaminant levels (MCL) of colloids. However, due to increasing demand of water, groundwater may be subjected to over-exploitation and the natural equilibrium is thus disturbed. A steady-state condition is established between seawater and freshwater in a coa...
متن کاملIncidence of Hip Fractures in Jeju Island, South Korea: A Prospective Study (2002-2006)
BACKGROUND This study was performed to estimate the incidence of hip fractures of people older than 50 years in South Korea. METHODS Information of patients over 50 years of age who had sustained a hip fracture were obtained from the records of eight hospitals in Jeju Island between 2002 and 2006 to calculate the incidence of hip fractures in this age group. RESULTS There were 820 hip fract...
متن کاملGroundwater conditions along the seawater/freshwater interface on a volcanic island and a depositional area in Japan
Fresh groundwater comes in contact with seawater at the downstream end of its flow system. Most previous work has discussed the shape of the seawater/freshwater interface on the basis of Ghyben-Herzberg’s law. The groundwater, however, pushes the seawater farther offshore side than predicted by the law, giving rise to freshwater flows even below the bottom of the sea. A previous study found tha...
